Life is so unpredictable. When you spend 20 years of your life married and raising children that is all you can ever imagine. Housewife. Mother. Caretaker. Divorce comes along and suddenly you get new titles: Single. Divorcée. Struggling single mother. Passionate creative soul, (trying to create the life of her dreams).
If someone told me 15 years ago my new best friend would be a gay young male, 20 years younger, and I'd be sleeping on his couch in a glorified dorm, which is actually an overpriced studio located in prime location in Boston, I would have shook my head in disbelief.
Unlikely friendships always turn out to be the best. Life throws unexpected people our way to teach us what we need to learn at the moment...a lighthouse keeper who I instantly found a deep, spiritual connection with, a stylish, charming Brit who just happened to be my next door neighbor when I was living in a loft apartment...
The lesson here is don't judge anyone by their age, appearance, or cultural differences. He or she was put in your life for a reason. Everyone in our path has been carefully selected. We learn a lesson from them, and possibly teach them a few as well. No one who comes into our world enters by accident. Embrace everyone, stay open, and you will be amazed at how you will continually grow and learn. We are never too busy to make a new friend.
Have you formed a friendship with an unlikely or unexpected friend? How has the relationship shaped you or affected the way you see the world? Do you agree unlikely friendships are often the best?
Love, Deb xoxo
