Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. - Marianne Williamson
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
Your are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
*passage from the book 'A Return To Love' (1992) by Marianne Williamson
I think we have all felt this at some point in our lives. I've noticed it lately in so many situations:
A bombshell of a Stylist, who after coloring her hair a glossy, sexy red and adding extensions, said, "Oh, boy, now I have to go to soccer. The other Moms are all going to think...here she comes."
"You're gorgeous. I told her. They can die their hair and get extensions if they want to. If anyone is judging it's their problem, why not shine?"
My beautiful friend who dresses to the tee was being harassed by a co-worker about her fabulous shoes. There was a no open toe shoe policy at work and each time one pretty pink toenail peeked out of her fabulous Tory Burch wedges, her co-worker would run and tattle. Really? If someone wants to dress frumpy that's fine, but don't judge others because they like to dress.
I have another friend who is so talented and we were discussing her career options. She literally said she was afraid to put herself out there and shine because last time she did it she was harassed so much.
If we don't allow ourselves to live up to our full potential and shine because it might make someone else feel insecure, then we can't serve the greater good or ever be able to fulfill our purpose in life. We are not meant to stay confined in a tiny box that limits our talents, our dress code, our ability to reach others and make change in the world.
Do yourself a favor...next time you feel yourself about to hold back...DON'T. Allow yourself to shine as you were meant to.
Sending light and love - Deb xoxo
